Terry Pomeroy, Lead Vocalist of "The Stillwater Retreat"

Terry Ostheller was one of the original founding members of "The Stillwater Retreat". In fact, she was the one who gave the group its name, based on Psalm 23, verse 2.

She had just graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a teaching certificate and came to Central Washington State College in Ellensburg, Washington to begin working on her fifth year. It was the Summer quarter and she found herself alone, away from family and friends until she saw a familiar face on campus.

It was Richard Pomeroy, whom she had seen playing his guitar for the college meetings at Dennis Bennett's Saint Luke's Episcopal church in the Ballard district of Seattle. She was overjoyed to see him, so she quickly made his acquaintance.

When Richard found out that Terry was a gifted vocalist, he invited her to begin attending rehearsals of his Christian folk singing group. There she met Marvin and Carol Breshears, and Gerry Osborne, who were the other members of the group.

Richard, Gerry, Marvin and Carol had all been members of the Gospel Team of the campus's Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship group, sponsored by the Assemblies of God. They were the only members left on campus during the summer, so they got together to continue during the summer what they had been doing throughout the year on the Gospel team.

Terry heard a lady sing Mozart’s “Alleluia” at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Kirkland, Washington when she was younger and thought that it was the most beautiful thing that she had ever heard. She told her parents that she wanted to be a singer when she grew up. They sent her to Lois Hall Peterson for voice lessons. Lois was the church organist and choir director at the church and a music instructor at Northwest Bible College of the Assemblies of God. She came from a family of prominent musicians in the Assemblies of God.

Terry performed in choirs and vocal ensembles throughout junior high, high school and college. Her parents constrained her to become certified to teach Home Economics through her college career, but the desire of her heart was to sing for the Lord.

By the end of the summer Terry and Richard realized that they were two of a kind and became engaged. They were married in the fall, and Carol, Marv and Gerry were all members of the wedding party. Terry Ostheller became Mrs. Terry Pomeroy.

That winter, Marv and Carol announced that they were joining the Peace Corps and would begin training in the Spring to go to Ethiopia. Gerry also announced that he and his wife would be moving to Yakima so that he could begin attending Selah Bible College and begin his preparation for the ministry.

Terry and Richard carried on the tradition of the group, performing up and down the West Coast and in the Midwest. They have ministered extensively in the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship, Women's Aglow Fellowship and in churches and for Christian organizations. For a while, their ministry was known as "Richard and Terry Sing". But they have revived the name "The Stillwater Retreat" and have begun recruiting other Christian musicians to begin building up the group again.
